Olympic Blog Post – I Got Rhythm…

And as the song goes: “Who could ask for anything more?”

The ice dancers hit the ice on Saturday in Beijing in one of my favourite segments which is the Rhythm Dance. Although there are five required elements, for many outsiders it looks pretty much like a short free dance. The music is always fun, and I love seeing the creativity and innovation. That said, the scoring can seem complicated to the uninitiated but if you can let go of the results and simply enjoy the skating, then it’s wonderful.

The French (genius) Ice Dance team of Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron were every inch the Olympic champions en route to my prediction of the top of the podium. Their program was sharp, interesting, modern, fast, and innovative. Let’s face it, these two have never met a record they didn’t want to break, and the Rhythm Dance was no exception with a new World Record score.

For Ontario’s Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier who are in the run for a medal, only .62 of a point separates them in sixth place from the team in 4th place and only about 3.5 points from third. It’s possible that their brilliant free dance will boost them in the standings. Regardless, theirs is a special program that shouldn’t be missed!

Before coming to Beijing, Piper shared her thoughts with me on taking a position on Olympic ice: “When I close my eyes and think of that moment, I feel nervous and excited all at the same time. What I hope to have in that moment is a reflection of all our hard work that has led us to this moment. Almost a celebration of who we are.

We are celebrating right there with you!
