Skater in Residence – Elvis Stojko and the Key!

Firstly, I would like to say I am honoured to be a part of the Skate Ontario, Skater in Residence and I want to thank Pj Kwong for this opportunity.

It took me awhile to figure out what I was going to write, but with a little meditating, I figured it out. Throughout my career, people have asked what was the ‘key” to my success. I think one of the main things that helped me was my ability to know what I wanted, and use visualization through meditation to help create my reality. So today, I want to share what I have learned and how I streamlined to make it work for me.

For me, meditation is the practice of connecting with my inner self away from the mundane world.  Connecting to my higher self without the distraction of the regular day-to-day physical things.  Meditation helps me clarify what I really want in life and strengthens my connection to it.  Now over the years I have meditated so much I can do it anywhere and I do not need to do it in the traditional way of sitting down cross-legged, eyes closed in a stereotypical “Monk” position.  When I do close my eyes, I just simply sit in a chair comfortably with my back straight and focus on my breathing.  I can use mediation in a couple of ways; one to simply disconnect from the distractions of the physical world or use it to visualize or help create.  I have studied, practiced and found things to help streamline my ability to manifest and that is what I want to share with you today, so here we go.

Number one, figure out what you really want. It has to be something deep within you and moves you. It can be an achievement, learning a skill, even getting something material, it’s really up to you and only you will know. Spend time to make it clear, simple and focus on one thing at a time.

The second thing is picture in your mind the result, not on HOW you will get it.  This is where you allow the Universe to help you out, because it’s really about your ability to work with the Universe to get what you want.  If you are not clear on what you want, the Universe will not understand what it is. The Universe also needs time to figure out and create the path so if you are not consistent and if you keep changing the goal it will never come to fruition.  So don’t get involved with the details of the path to getting what you want, because the Universe may take you on a path you never thought of, and it is exactly what you need to experience in order to help you get what you want.

The third thing is to connect to your goal with emotion.  To believe is to feel with emotion and get excited about your goal.  I believe our physical brains are used to being connected to the mundane world so we can do our daily tasks, but our real brain is in our gut or Chi centre.  It is connected to one of our Chakras but that is a whole other topic.  Do you ever notice when you are about to cry or get emotional you feel it in your gut first then it just takes over you?  That is what I am talking about. Your goal has to fill you up and take over you with emotion.  Wishing it to happen will not work – only true believing works.

The fourth thing is a big one and can be the “make it or break it” rule. Picture and use words that put you in a state of already achieving your goal.  If you focus on “I really want that” or “I will achieve that” you will always be in that state of “wanting” but never actually achieving or having.  This is the toughest part of it all, because sometimes getting what you really want can actually scare you and you subconsciously stay in the “almost got it” mode to protect yourself.  Feel the emotion of already having it and experiencing it and that is where true belief is.  That is where the phrase “careful what you wish for” comes into play. For me to become a Champion I had to already believe I was one, and accept the responsibility of being one.  I saw it in my mind’s eye, felt it well up from my Chi centre and live it with my heart.  I knew I was already a Champion before the medal went around my neck.

So, the fifth and last thing is to help the Universe help you.  Physically go after your goal knowing you already have it, you are just simply experiencing the “ride” of getting it.  The Universe will help guide you in what you need to do, to get it.  An idea or thought may pop into your mind that will help put you on the right path toward your goal.  An obstacle may be put in front of you for a reason to learn and understand before you experience your goal fully.   I have had my share of ups and downs, and we all know life is not easy, but since I streamlined my approach, I don’t bang my head against the wall so much anymore.  If I feel my goal has “stalled” then usually, one of my points above is not clear and I go back and meditate on it until I find the answer.  There are moments I still have to remind myself to let the Universe do its thing and simply breathe and believe.

To sum it all up, I believe it is about knowing yourself. Once you know yourself, you will know what you truly want and if you really see it all clearly then you realize that we were born with everything we need inside of us.  We are not missing anything; we are not creating ourselves but simply revealing what was already there.

Hope you enjoyed the read, Blessing to you.
