member-spotlight

Please join us in welcoming this month’s Skate Ontario Member Spotlight: Matrix Synchronized Skating Academy. Matrix recently hosted an incredibly successful Bring ON the Fun in Port Colborne in partnership with the West Lincoln Skating Club, and it was a pleasure to catch up with them to chat about their experience.

Matrix’s philosophy is all about having fun and embracing challenge. Their goal is to create a positive and encouraging environment where everyone – regardless of age, background, or skill level – feels safe, supported, and inspired to grow. According to Head Coach Katie McGarrigle, Matrix “maintains a safe, welcoming environment by prioritizing respect, inclusion, and clear communication across all levels. All skaters, coaches, and volunteers agree to a code of conduct that promotes kindness and sportsmanship.”

In recent years Matrix has also placed a focus on building community off the ice. They have built a positive rapport with skaters and their families by engaging in frequent communication with their community and engaging skaters with team events and functions such as golf tournaments, fundraisers, showcases and “bring a friend to synchro” days.

This season Matrix also hosted the Port Colborne Bring ON the Fun. “I had a great experience planning and hosting our Bring in the Fun event,” Katie says. “We all worked well together and were eager to make the event a success. Working alongside Barry and Nicki from the West Lincoln Skating Club was a great asset as they had experience volunteering at singles events in the past.”

Katie’s advice to clubs/skating schools planning on hosting a Bring ON the Fun next season: “I definitely learned that you can plan everything out but, anything can happen! Just roll with it and don’t stress if things don’t go exactly as planned.”

When asked what makes her the most proud to be a part of the Matrix Synchronized Skating Academy, Katie said, “Our skaters. They are each other’s biggest cheerleaders. Always supporting each other and always welcoming to new skaters coming into the school.”

Congratulations on a successful season, Matrix!
