member-spotlight
Welcome to the Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club, Canada’s largest skating club! Established in 1938, this club is currently home to over 3,900 members. At the heart of the KWSC’s operation is their mission, vision, and philosophy:
Mission: Inspiring a lifelong passion for excellence through skating.
Vision: To be a world-class skating centre for the entire community.
Philosophy: To follow a ‘skater-first’ philosophy in every decision—to ensure that the needs of our skaters are always the primary consideration.
These guiding principles serve as a reminder that every decision, big or small, begins with the skater in mind.
The KWSC shared with Skate Ontario, “At KWSC, we like to think of ourselves as one big skating family. Whether you’re lacing up your skates for the very first time or training for national competitions, you’re part of a community that truly cares about your growth and your experience. We’re proud to have an incredible staff and a coaching team who bring both professionalism and a personal touch to everything they do. Behind the scenes, passionate volunteers, thoughtful organization, and good policies and procedures keep us running smoothly — but what really makes it work is the people. Everyone here shares an enthusiasm for creating an environment where every skater, coach, and volunteer feels seen, supported, and valued.”
Quality Coaching

At KWSC, safety and belonging go hand in hand. Coaches are nationally certified, well-trained, and deeply committed to creating an atmosphere where skaters feel supported to take risks, learn, and grow.
Technical Director Anabelle Langlois-Hay’s vision of a “positive culture of excellence” guides all of the club’s work, combining Safe Sport principles, continuous learning, and the Long-Term Development model to ensure every skater has a pathway to success. The KWSC coaching team prioritizes collaboration. Through a team-coaching structure, skaters learn from multiple experts who share ideas and best practices across disciplines.
This collaborative spirit extends off the ice as well, as coaches, volunteers, skaters and families come together to celebrate milestones and support one another’s progress through initiatives such as the Jump Boards, KWSC Awards Event, volunteer recognition programs, skater send-offs and Club-hosted competitions.
Inclusivity

KWSC is continually finding new and innovative ways to be inclusive. “From our CanSkate welcome tables and the LGBTQ+ flag displayed in our rink, to our Adaptive CanSkate program and CanSkate@School program, to opening a universal change room, we’re proud to make skating more welcoming for everyone.
This commitment to inclusion and belonging is part of our daily actions and is central to our long-term vision for the future. Skate Ontario’s values of leadership, accountability, collaboration and excellence are woven into the fabric of KWSC. Our volunteer Board of Directors and staff lead with vision and heart, setting the tone for a club that values innovation, teamwork, health, and well-being.”
Skater Development

KWSC is proud to offer figure skating training across all disciplines: Singles, Dance, Pairs, and Synchro. This multidisciplinary approach allows skaters to find more opportunities to excel in one or more disciplines of their choice. KWSC also runs CanSkate and Power Skating programming across ten facilities/arenas in Kitchener-Waterloo.
Excellence is reflected not only in the KWSC’s competitive results, but also in the comprehensive development model, which combines on-ice and off-ice training through The Rotation Room for jump technique, and a gym and ballet studio for fitness, dance, and flexibility. All of this takes place within a world -class training centre at RIM Park in Waterloo, where skaters are supported in becoming well-rounded athletes.
A Brand New Strategic Plan

The KWSC recently shared a new Strategic Plan. “We’re really excited about our new four-year Strategic Plan. The plan is all about inspiring excellence while staying true to our community roots. Aligned with Skate Canada and Skate Ontario’s forward-thinking initiatives, our plan revolves around three key pillars: Inspire, Create, and Excellence.”

Community

“Every day, you can feel the energy and care in our rink. The laughter, the encouragement, the friendships forming on and off the ice. We’re proud to be the largest skating club in Canada, but what matters most is the sense of community that holds it all together. From exciting special events and a spectacular ice show to many seminars and learning opportunities for Coaches and skaters, competitions, volunteer activities and more — we see passion come to life both on and off the ice. Watching skaters develop confidence, determination, and resilience through their sport is truly special. They learn determination, analysis, strategy, to celebrate victories big and small, to lift others up, and to face challenges with courage. Those lessons go far beyond the rink, and that’s what makes us #KWSCProud.”
Thank you, KWSC, for being such incredible representatives of our sport in your community. Please join us in congratulating this wonderful club on all of their accomplishments.
