We are pleased to introduce our next Member Spotlight, the Georgina Skating Club! The Georgina Skating Club (formerly known as the Keswick Figure Skating Club and the North Gwillimbury Figure Skating Club) was founded in 1966, and celebrated their 50th year in 2017.

Georgina’s mission is to provide lifelong opportunities to enjoy the love of skating. Over the years, this club has developed talented skaters ranging from National Gold Medalists to AAA hockey players.

Earlier this year, Georgina was announced as one of five clubs who were selected to participate in Skate Ontario’s Club Modernization Pilot Program, an exciting new program that provides Skate Ontario Member Clubs and Skating Schools with the opportunity to partner with Skate Ontario in the delivery of quality experiences in skating.

Four months in, it is clear to anyone who stops by the club that Georgina has truly embraced the “21st Century Coaching Model” that is a foundational aspect of the program.

They promote a team environment amongst both their skaters and coaches, with most programs being team coached. Ensuring that coaches work well together, and that skaters are comfortable with any coach, is a priority for this club. Georgina coaches are always searching for new ways to support their coaching team and see skaters grow.

“It has been a pleasure working with the Georgina Skating Club as they dive into the Club Modernization Program this season,” says Denise Harris, Skate Ontario’s Coordinator of Club Programs. “They are dedicated to implementing an athlete-centred training model at their club, and after only four months have made positive changes to their programs, both on and off the ice, that have benefitted both skaters and coaches.” These changes include adding a physical literacy component to their off ice training program, as well as introducing 100% coached on ice sessions so that skaters are getting the absolute most out of their ice time.

Georgina Skating Club has received their CanSkate Excellence Exceeded Standard designation, as well as their Star 1-5 Excellence Engaged Standard designation. Their other many accomplishments include hosting the annual K.I.S Competition, a three-day event that draws approximately 700 skaters from all over Ontario to compete in the Star 5-Gold categories. This event provides an opportunity not only for skaters to get out on competition ice, but for family and community members to get involved with the club as volunteers, and learn about how a competition runs behind-the-scenes.

“We’re proud to be working with this wonderful club, and look forward to seeing how their work in the Club Modernization Program will continue to benefit their skaters”, Denise says.
