The rhythm dance and women’s free skate brought contrasting energy and emotion to the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, highlighting both the vibrancy of ice dance and the intensity of a world title showdown.

The World Championships in Prague are chock-a-block full of fans and the roar of the crowd and how it felt for Madeline Schizas was something I wanted to know. When she came through the media area, it was clear that she was pleased with her performance as well she should be. “It’s such a special experience performing to a full crowd and everyone’s so supportive,” said Maddie.

“Being able to stay focused in an uneven season of performances is an admirable skill. That perseverance paid off today for Maddie, who held her own in 15th place,” said Debbi Wilkes.

Maddie’s skate was a great way to finish off the season and for anyone who needs to know, the university assignment that she was supposed to turn in and was delayed by the Olympics did make it to her professor.

Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier are still fresh from the high that comes from an Olympic bronze medal. Before taking the ice today for the Rhythm Dance, Paul shared this with me: “I see the post-Olympic Worlds as an opportunity for skaters to create a name for themselves at the start of the new quadrennial. For us this time, it’s simply a celebration and a chance to enjoy what this season has brought us.” And celebrate they did, right into second place.

Coach Carol Lane commented: “They so much enjoyed their skate today. They were relaxed and happy and to end with a season’s best was the icing on the cake!”

Together, the rhythm dance and women’s free skate displayed the diversity of figure skating—where musicality meets athleticism, and where each discipline brings its own narrative to the championship. As the event continues in Prague, the blend of experience, ambition, and artistry ensures that the competition remains both unpredictable and compelling.
