When Daryl Lapointe, who was away with friends at a cottage weekend, started receiving phone calls from Skate Ontario on Friday, June 6, he immediately got in touch with his wife, Jenelle, to ask if she knew the reason why. Jenelle had no idea.
Though this is not the Lapointe’s first time entering the Ontario Skaters Promotional Contest – they have been entering since their daughter first started skating 7 years ago – in previous years it had been Jenelle who filled out the contest ballots. They assumed that if they had won, it would be Jenelle receiving the call.
As it turns out, it was Daryl who filled out the ballots this time around, and who must be pretty lucky, as it was his name that was pulled out of the drum during our 2025 End of Year Live Broadcast! Daryl, who works in a high school, was finally able to connect with Skate Ontario on Monday to hear the good news. By the end of the day the entire school was abuzz with the news that Daryl had won a car.
Daryl and Jenelle are parents to two Skate Ontario skaters, Charlotte and Hendricks. Hendricks is currently working on his Stage 3 CanSkate badge, and Charlotte is a STAR 2 skater at the Orillia Figure Skating Club. Last season was Charlotte’s first competitive season, and the family had a busy winter driving around to the three STAR 1-4 competitions she competed in. In fact, during a trip down to Toronto to pick up a new dress and skate bag ahead of a competition last winter, the family van broke down! While Charlotte may not have been thrilled at that moment to be wheeling her brand new bag through the snow, it now makes for a good story to look back on – one they can laugh at while driving to next season’s competitions in their new ride!
