Article

Not long ago, Skate Ontario wrapped up its 34th annual Skaters’ Promotional Contest and the Grand Prize was a 2022 Nissan Kicks provided by Skate Ontario Champion partner Scarborough Nissan. Not bad for a two-dollar donation.

That unbelievable ‘toonie’ trade for a set of wheels is where our story begins.

The phone rang and when Rose Mirasol answered she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Literally. “You’ve won our Grand Prize and it’s a car!” said the voice on the other end. What?!?

This had to be a scam. There are so many out there in the world and no doubt the next step would be for the caller to ask Rose for personal information and maybe even a credit card. She wasn’t going to fall for it.

Nothing could have been further from the truth. At some point, some place, Rose made a two-dollar donation for a ticket sold through the Milton SC, in support of skating in the Province of Ontario and her name was drawn.

Things like that don’t happen every day and, to Rose, there still seemed the chance that this was a scam. She asked her three sons. They thought it was likely a scam and told her to disregard the call.

“I first spoke with my son Joshua who said to ‘just ignore it.’ I was getting a lot of spam calls, so I thought it was one of those calls.,” said Rose. “I was being extra cautious after one time I bought something online and after, I noted in my bank account that there was money was missing. It scared me. I learned a lesson.”

Skate Ontario’s Emma Toman who was in charge of disbursing the prizes had to call Rose twice who was still unsure. Even Derek Ventnor, Skate Ontario’s COO, called Rose to reassure her and tell her that someone from Scarborough Nissan would be calling to collect her information to license the car.

It was starting to seem real. Maybe. Especially since another son, Reinard googled and saw her name in connection with the car.

“Rose. It’s real. You won the car!” said Steven Cho, Manager of Scarborough Nissan when he called.

Rose was convinced although she admits to still a shadow of a doubt in the back of her mind as she made her way to Scarborough Nissan to pick up the car.

She needn’t have worried and is thrilled with the Nissan Kicks!

“I like the car very much and I took a photo of the car and sent it to my 3 boys. They all love it too!”

They aren’t the only ones! Congratulations Rose from everyone at Skate Ontario and Scarborough Nissan!
