Subject: Skate Ontario Advocacy Regarding Ontario’s New School Attendance Policy

Dear Members,

Skate Ontario has sent a letter to Ontario’s Ministry of Sport regarding the implementation of the province’s new school attendance policy and its potential impact on young people participating in organized sport.

To keep members informed, a copy of the letter is attached so you can review the specific recommendations submitted by Skate Ontario on behalf of our organization.

While we support the government’s objective of improving student attendance and addressing chronic absenteeism, we have requested clarification that the policy’s implementation will continue to recognize the important role youth sport participation plays in supporting student achievement, attendance, personal development, and overall well-being.

Specifically, Skate Ontario has asked that:

• Organized sport participation and competition be explicitly recognized as an acceptable parent-approved absence; and
• No fixed numerical limit be placed on parent-approved sport-related absences where students remain in good academic standing and continue to meet curriculum expectations.

Our letter highlights the significant benefits of sport participation for young people and the importance of ensuring that sport and education continue to be viewed as complementary, not competing, priorities. Student-athletes should not be disadvantaged for pursuing opportunities that build many of the same skills and attributes that contribute to academic achievement, lifelong health, leadership, and future success.

We know many members are closely following this issue. If you wish to do so, you may also consider contacting your local Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) to share your own experiences regarding the value of sport participation and the importance of ensuring young people can continue to benefit from both educational and athletic opportunities.
