Sport and recreation have the power to change people’s lives and build communities of engaged citizens. The Department of Athletics and Recreation’s mission is to champion the development of the whole student through sporting excellence and active wellbeing. Through this, we empower our varsity athletes to achieve their full potential both athletically and academically. With our recreation programs we focus on active wellbeing as a learning strategy, providing opportunities for students to thrive socially, personally and at their studies.  

Our programs, along with our commitment to the communities we serve, foster a spirit of belonging and pride, and contribute to a civil and sustainable society.  Be it in the sports arena, on the field, or in our athletic and fitness centers, we engage students, faculty and alumni beyond the classroom.

In the last five years, TMU’s teams have achieved historic firsts for rankings and championships. Meanwhile, they have reached new heights for academic achievement, such as overall athlete GPA, while breaking records with volunteer service hours. As a result, TMU alumni are people who make a difference wherever they go.

TMU Bold varsity teams and clubs in  which over 400 student-athletes compete both nationally in U SPORTS, and provincially in the Ontario University Athletics Conference. 

The Opportunity

The TMU Bold Figure Skating Team is a Varsity Club team that represents TMU in interuniversity sport competition in the OUA sport conference. The Department of Athletics is seeking an experienced and energetic person to serve as the Head Coach and Supervisor of the program. This individual will work under the direction of the Varsity and Competitive Clubs Coordinator and the Manager, Sport Operations. The position is responsible for coaching, administration and development of the team. Key roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate the direction and operation of the program, including training and competition.

  • Recruit, mentor, develop, and retain student-athletes.

  • Prepare and supervise all team practices and training activities.

  • Ensure athletes and team personnel adhere to the expectations and guidelines outlined in the Student-Athlete Charter.

  • Recruit and oversee additional support staff, as required.

  • Maintain regular and effective communication with athletes and team personnel.

  • Attend meetings and professional development sessions as prescribed by the Varsity and Competitive Clubs Coordinator.

  • Maintain current knowledge of trends, best practices, and regulatory requirements necessary to build and sustain a successful university program, ensuring compliance with all National Sport Organization (NSO), Provincial Sport Organization (PSO), and Ontario University Athletics (OUA) rules and regulations, and confirming that athletes meet all eligibility and participation requirements.

  • Support student-athletes in fundraising and community engagement initiatives.

  • Prepare and complete an annual program review, grant application, and team budget.

  • Promote student-athlete academic success.

  • Contribute to a positive team culture and athlete well-being.

  • Work collaboratively with the Varsity and Competitive Clubs Coordinator to coordinate travel and accommodations for off-site competition.

  • Actively oversee and support risk management and mitigation initiatives.

The figure skating season begins in September and finishes in early to mid March. 

The candidate needs to be a strong leader with diverse coaching knowledge and ability to work well with others. It is essential that the candidate act in accordance with documented procedures and policies set by TMU and the appropriate governing bodies. Effective communication, management, and organizational skills are required.
