As the Skate Canada National Figure Skating Championships come to a close in Gatineau, the skaters are bringing home far more than medals. The experience on the national stage is invaluable and can be reflected in the changes and updates that the athletes will make to their training ‘toolkit’ once home.
“Champions aren’t defined by what went right, but also by how honestly they reflect on what didn’t, turning lessons learned into fuel for growth to become the athletes they deserve to be,” said Chris Mabee, Skate Ontario’s Director of Sport.
Competing at this level teaches skaters how to manage pressure, adapt to unexpected challenges, and perform with resilience when the stakes are highest. Every program—whether flawless or flawed—offers valuable insight into technical preparation, mental focus, and strategic decision-making.
Senior Women’s competitor Lulu Lin’s coach Paul Parkinson offered this perspective about his student. “Lulu doesn’t really need to add to her toolkit although this experience at Nationals has helped build her confidence and to realize she can do this.”
These experiences help athletes identify areas for growth, build confidence through adversity, and refine their goals for the future. Ultimately, the lessons gained at a national championship become essential building blocks in an athlete’s long-term development, fostering perseverance, self-awareness, and a deeper commitment to excellence.
