Skate Ontario athletes under the Team Ontario banner are headed to the Skate Canada Trophy event taking place in Edmonton from February 6 – 9.
According to Skate Canada’s website, “the 2025 Skate Canada Trophy is a new, national competition that brings together the former Novice Canadian Championships and Skate Canada Challenge and puts Pre-Novice/Novice events under one umbrella.” This event is actually the national championships for both the pre-novice and novice levels.
For my money, this is an essential event for skaters and coaches alike, providing a top notch event where skaters can showcase their talent, refine their performances, and gain valuable competitive experience on a national stage. As a key stop in the skating season, this event not only serves as a critical benchmark for athletes preparing for major championships but also fosters the development of emerging talent.
For coaches, it is an opportunity to strategize, adapt, and guide their skaters through high-pressure performances, ensuring they are at their best when it matters most. Beyond the scores and medals, the Skate Canada Trophy is a celebration of dedication, artistry, and athletic excellence, contributing to Canada’s legacy as a powerhouse in figure skating.
Jenson Raybould
For coach David Long, whose skater Jenson Raybould from The Granite Club will compete in Pre-Novice Men, he sees the value of the Edmonton event. After missing last season’s event due to illness, qualifying this year with two solid skates at Sectionals is especially satisfying for Jenson. “I am looking forward the Edmonton and this event where Jenson, a Grade 8 student, is excited to represent his province and club,” said David. “I also want to add that this event is something that we both see as a potential springboard for future national championships.”
We are #SkateOntarioProud of the athletes making the trek to Edmonton which include in the Pre-Novice categories: 15 Women, 15 Men, 7 Pairs and 8 Dance teams. For the Novice events, there are 15 women, 15 men, 4 pairs and 2 dance teams. This is an impressive team!
“When I think about how hard the coaches and skaters are working all season long, I am not surprised by the depth of the talent that is representing Ontario this weekend in Edmonton,” said Lisa Alexander, Skate Ontario Executive Director. “Even more gratifying is knowing that we are witnessing skaters at the very beginning of their careers.”
