Have you ever wondered what it is like packing for a tour season as a professional figure skater? With a new tour season just around the corner, my husband, Graham Hockley, 34, from Whitby, Ontario is currently in the process of organizing his suitcases.
“You only bring what you need. You don’t have a lot of extra unnecessary things,” says Graham.
From scorching hot summers to icy cold winters, packing can be challenging at times.
“Traveling the world, you have to be prepared for every climate. You’ve got to pack for all four seasons. Tank tops to a winter coat because you might be in Florida one week, and Winnipeg the next, in the middle of January,” Graham explains.
Staying within a limit of 50 pounds per bag with a maximum of two suitcases per person can also be difficult. “Everything adds up. Skating socks, skates, guards, bunga pads, skating pants… makeup, brushes, and other show related items. It’s around 15 pounds of equipment that has to go into your suitcase,” Graham says.
Sometimes professional skaters even bring an extra pair of backup skates with them.
Formal wear is also a must. “You need to be prepared for special occasions like a New Year’s party or date night,” Graham explains.
With over 14 years of experience with a touring ice show company, Graham says that it has been interesting to learn what you actually need and what you can live without. This upcoming tour season Graham will be away from home for over eight months. “Packing for tour is like putting your entire life into a suitcase,” he says.
However, bringing his own coffee cup is a must. “It’s a little piece of home I bring with me no matter where I am,” says Graham with a smile.
