For skating fans, the launch of the six-event ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series is cause for celebration because we all get a sneak peek of our favourite skaters and what they will be performing this season. Let’s be honest, it’s also the chance to check out the field and maybe even find some new skating heroes.
Chongqing, China, the original home of my favourite spicy hotpot dish will also play host to the final Grand Prix event known as Cup of China and no doubt things will heat up on the ice as well. Skaters are looking to clinch one of six spots in each discipline for the ISU Grand Prix Final taking place in France in December. We all love the Grand Prix Final as it often gives a preview of what might happen at the end of the season at the ISU World Championships.
For Skate Ontario, there are two entries headed to this prestigious event in women and pairs.
Madeline Schizas from the Milton Skating Club is appearing in her second of two Grand Prix events after a fifth place finish at Skate Canada International recently in Halifax. Maddie has said that she loves her material this year and she will be looking to continue to evolve in her skating style while maintaining her technical excellence. I am also looking forward to seeing surprise winner from Grand Prix de France, American Amber Glenn as well as the three Japanese women (Mone Chiba, Rion Sumiyoshi and Rinka Watanabe) all of whom have also medaled in their first Grand Prix events.
Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud from the Milton and Trenton Skating Clubs are looking to ‘find the calm’ in their second appearance on the Grand Prix in the pairs discipline, according to their coach Alison Purkiss. At the recent Skate Ontario Sectional Championships, Alison told me that Lia and Trennt had been very satisfied with their short program at the recent Grand Prix de France, but they had lost their focus during the free. They are looking to find their footing in China and put them back on track for the rest of the season. Making the Grand Prix Final will be tough but I wouldn’t count this team out in any way, shape or form. Quite simply put: they rock!
