Rebound to Skating Toolkit – Playbook and Teaching Aids

Hot off the press! The Skate Ontario Rebound to Skating Playbook is ready for you. With the help of club/skating school volunteers and coaches from across the province, we have created this resources to support getting our skaters back on the ice. There is a hard copy of the Playbook coming directly to you as part of the Rebound to Skating Toolkit which you should receive in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we have a digital version available for you to peruse as you work through your planning for this upcoming season.

In addition to the Playbook, we are also including the following teaching aids as part of the Rebound to Skating Toolkit:

Rebound to Skating Webinar Series

Skate Ontario, with the support of a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, has been delivering weekly webinars to help support your club/skating school with planning for this upcoming season. Topics covered range from registration considerations to program delivery options to financial management processes. We have just passed the half way mark in our webinar schedule with some very exciting topics still to come.

Past Recorded Webinars

#1 – Let’s Talk! Ideas that came out of last season (July 21, 2021)

This webinar highlighted the ideas and considerations directly from Ontario clubs/schools. We discuss ideas that were utilized through the last season/pandemic to navigate the uncertainty of our circumstances to keep their members engaged. The webinar covers the topics of managing your relationship with your facility, membership demographic considerations and how to effectively combine your on ice sessions.


#2 – Budget Talk for Clubs & Skating Schools (July 28, 2021)

Here, we focused on the important topic of Club Budgets. Derek Ventnor, Director of Finance and Business Operations at Skate Ontario, discussed the importance of why you need a budget and where to start the process from. The webinar finishes with a discussion on some virtual fundraising options for clubs/schools to consider as you plan your activities for this upcoming season.


#3 – Season Planning Considerations for Clubs & Skating Schools (August 4, 2021)

In this webinar we covered several integral topics in the season planning process. The webinar starts off with some registration considerations with emphasis on transitioning to an online platform. Scheduling considerations are discussed next, including offered programs and Performance & Development Opportunities (PDOs). We highlight volunteer recruitment and retention techniques to consider and we round out the session with discussion on contingency planning.


#4 – Program Planning for Clubs & Skating Schools (August 11, 2021)

Come explore the resources available for your program planning at your club/school. We address some considerations to think about as you move through the process for this upcoming season. The webinar begins with a quick review of program numbers and where to find important information in resources. We move on to explore offering a range of programs, modified program delivery options (CanSkate Hockey, PreCanSkate, CanSkate Parent & tot, etc.) and optimizing your on and off ice time.


#5 – Communications and Marketing for Clubs & Skating Schools (August 18, 2021)

This webinar dives into the topic of Communications at your club/school. Claire Beauchamp, Manager of Communications and Branding at Skate Ontario, takes you through the process of why and how to build a communications plan for your organization. Claire discusses the do’s and don’ts of social media and highlights the marketing material Skate Ontario will be providing to clubs this fall.


#6 – Yearly Planning Essentials (for all levels of skaters) with Richard Sylvester & Alison Purkiss (August 19, 2021)

Richard Sylvester (Sport for Life) joined us to share insights surrounding key issues to consider when planning for your skaters. Alison Purkiss (Skate Ontario Coach) offered pertinent dialogue to relate Richard’s information directly to figure skating.



#7 – Mental Health for All with Dr. Judy Goss (August 25, 2021)

Having dealt with all the stress and uncertainty of the last year and half, it is important to take care of one’s mental health. Hosted by Dr. Judy Goss, Mental Performance Consultant, this webinar discusses the importance of mental health and provides applicable tips to manage your mental health for all stakeholder groups (athletes, parents, club/school volunteers, coaches, etc.).


#8 – Performance & Development Opportunity Example “Prep & Info – Skater Planning Session” with RoxAnne Daignault (August 26, 2021)

We have been working with coaches and club volunteers to create more Performance & Development Opportunity (PDO) resources. In this session, Roxanne Daignault (Director, Kenora Skating Academy) expands on her goal setting and yearly planning session offered each year in her skating school.
