Given the current and fluid state of COVID-19, we regret to inform you that Skate Ontario has made the difficult decision to cancel Sectional Series #2 – scheduled for August 13-16, 2020. This decision has been made in discussion with coaches and taking into account the timelines of skaters returning to the ice.
At this time, the Province of Ontario has extended their State of Emergency until June 9th. The recently released Skate Ontario Stage 1 – Return to Play protocols outline the guidelines for Novice, Junior and Senior skaters (Singles, Pairs & Dance) and Junior and Senior Synchronized skaters to return to the ice. As a reminder, no other lower levels of skaters are currently permitted on the ice. We await further information from the government on the timelines and guidelines for Stage 2 and these will impact the safe return of all our skaters across the Province.
Skate Ontario is currently working to determine how the cancellation of both summer Sectional Series events will impact the qualifying system for the Skate Ontario Sectional Championships. We will provide more details about this in the coming weeks. As a reminder, Skate Canada announced that due to the uncertainties with COVID-19, the Challenge Minimum score requirement will be removed for the 2020-2021 competitive season.
We understand this break has been long and difficult for skaters and we are committed to ensuring their return to skating is done in a safe and measured manner. We will continue to work to provide our coaches, skaters, and parents with adequate information during this time and continue to adjust together.
Please remember that the safety of our skaters, coaches, officials, clubs/skating schools and volunteers is our utmost priority during these difficult times.
