Job Description
PURPOSE:
The STARSkate Director will continue to keep the Mississauga Skating Club growing and leading in the community by delivering Skate Canada’s STARSkate program building on the success of our CanSkate program to motivate skaters to Skate for Life.
The Director will provide leadership for the PreJunior and STARSkate programs including meeting and exceeding the standards and expectations as set out by Skate Canada, continuing to expand the PreJunior and STARSkate programs by promoting our supporting programs such as Fitness thereby encouraging skaters to develop sport specific skills to enhance progression in all figure skating disciplines.
Further, the Director shall provide leadership and development of the PreJunior and STARSkate Coaching Team and guide member parents and skaters as they progress through the levels.
MSC offers programs Mondays through Saturdays between Tomken and Iceland Arenas with 19 hours of ice per week.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.
On-Ice Programming
- Determine Coaching Team requirements and class groupings based on registration numbers.
- Create group lesson plans (freeskate, dance, skills, artistic & synchro), rotating the lessons and the coaches approximately every two months throughout the season.
- Coordinate badge and ribbons distribution for PreJunior programs and assessment ribbons for STARSkate.
- Conduct in-person parent orientation sessions for the PreJunior/Junior program during week 3 or 4 for both Fall and Winter and as needed providing program information, future planning, upcoming events etc. and to respond to questions.
- Coordinate with the fitness instructor(s) to ensure quality programming, development and regular progress tracking.
- Record skater’s progress by transferring information from the Progress Sheets (on the clipboards) into Uplifter weekly.
- Prepare a monthly Coaching Team tracking report for the Technical Director in order to reconcile Coaching Team invoices.
2.
Coach Management
- Ensure that all Coach Team member absences are covered.
- Ensure Coaching Team members who are qualified are regularly assessing skaters as per Skate Canada program guidelines.
- Create a coaching schedule for group lessons based on seniority, program requirements and availability.
Position Term/ Renumeration
Salary commensurate with experience with a start date of August 15, 2024 through August 31, 2025. This role is approximately 8-10 hours weekly.
Qualifications
- Will be able to commit to club coaching on ice a minimum of 5 days per week.
- Highly dynamic, motivated, self-directed with a positive attitude.
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in related field preferred.
- Be a minimum of NCCP Regional Certified Coach in good standing.
- Have a minimum of 5 years of coaching experience at minimum Regional Certified level.
- Experience in coaching and assessing in the STAR 1 – Gold Programs, preferably in all disciplines.
- Ability to maintain a flexible schedule with the ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Comfortable to work in a team environment.
- Possess exceptional organizational and management skills.
- Have strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience managing people and programs within the Skate Canada framework.
- Proficiency with Word, Excel and Uplifter platform is beneficial.
- Previous experience in a leadership / managerial role is considered an asset.
- Commitment to yearly continuing education.
