Program Director, West Toronto Skating Club

West Toronto Skating Club is an all-year, Skate Canada-sanctioned, volunteer-run club located at McCormick Arena in the Dufferin St./Dundas West area of Toronto with a membership of over 400 skaters. Since 1984, we have been running programs from recreational (child through to adult) to competitive training. We have Achieved CanSkate Excellence status, and strive to offer exceptional CanSkate, CanPowerSkate, and STAR programming, as well as off-ice instruction. We provide a fun and positive community that cultivates a life-long passion for the sport.

We endeavour to provide skating instruction in a supportive environment which encourages success for all, whether skating for fun, fitness, or competition. We embrace Skate Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) philosophy and, over the last few years, have increased our focus on group instruction, including at the lower STARskate levels. We have also implemented a robust bridge program (“RisingSTARS”) that facilitates talent identification and athlete progression in a group format.

We are seeking a Program Director of exemplary character who is aligned with this approach to oversee programming for our club.

The ideal Program Director is:

An energetic professional who is eager to lead the enhancement and delivery of all our Skate Canada programs into the future
A Skate Canada certified coach with experience leading club programming
A team-builder who supports and mentors coaches
Committed to working with our team of Board volunteers
Able to work 20 hours/week, including onsite supervision and some off-site administration
Training/orientation and consultation with our current Program Director will be available

Start date: February/March 2023 (TBC)

Key Responsibilities:

1. Develop and oversee all on- and off-ice programs (CanSkate, StarSkate, CanPower) to meet or exceed Skate Canada minimum delivery standards:

–        Develop annual program plan for the upcoming season, including all on-ice and off-ice program schedules, pricing, and budget

–        Manage day-to-day programming operations for all on- and off-ice programs

–        Be present during program delivery to monitor implementation and to step in as required (absences may arise on an exceptional basis)

–        Maintain CanSkate Achieved Excellence requirements, and work toward “exceeded” standard

–        Oversee talent identification through our RisingStar (bridge) program

–        Build an effective and robust StarSkate program

–        Continue and expand club-led classes and groups at the early STAR levels

–        Coach five (5) group sessions per week to provide instruction to and touchpoints with skaters and provide training to coaches

–        Lead the coaches in developing a unified approach to teaching jumps in group classes

–        Ensure required supplies and inventory are available to deliver planned programming

–        Organize regular test days, and work with Test Chair

–        Ensure safe sport standards are observed and enforced

–        Make recommendations to the Board of Directors on policies pertaining to programming

2. Participate in coach hiring and lead team building

–        Meet regularly and interact with coaches to build an effective team

–        Assign coaches to group lessons; monitor attendance and performance and approve coach invoices

–        Develop a team coaching culture and best practices

–        Ensure staff adherence to club regulations and procedures

–        Conduct performance reviews of coaches and make recommendations to the Board

–        Recruit coaches as appropriate for approval by the Board

–        Train and supervise Program Assistants

–        Share professional resources and information with coaches

–        Make recommendations to the Board on coach development

3. Work with coaching team to deliver workshops, seminars, special events, and coordinate participation in competitions where appropriate

–        Organize workshops, seminars and other skater events, i.e., 2 StarSkate showcase days/year, possible ice show, fun club competitions, gala/awards celebration

–        Coordinate participation of skaters in competition events, particularly where they do not have private coaches attending

4. Help to educate parents and skaters on the details of skating programs and pathways

–        In collaboration with the Board, develop and implement communication/orientation plan for parent education

–        Respond to parents on program related questions

5. Participate in strategic planning with the Board to develop programming and membership goals over 3 to 5 years; including consultation with coaches

6. Report to the Board of Directors on a monthly basis at Board meetings and regular communication as required

7. Office/Administrative duties: e.g., registration, accounts payable, response to emails, website maintenance, updates to records in Uplifter software (training available)
