2019 Skate Ontario Summer Competition Initiative

Skate Ontario is pleased to send two teams of athletes and coaches at the pre-novice and novice levels in singles, pair and ice dance to summer competitions outside of Ontario. The selected event for singles and pair is Wild Rose in Edmonton, Alberta (August 2 – 5, 2019) and the selected event for ice dance is Lake Placid, New York (July 30 – August 2, 2019). Travelling and staying together as a team, this initiative is designed to simulate a national and international competitive experience.

To determine the team selection, Skate Ontario will conduct a tryout1 held on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at 9:00 am EST at the Brant Sports Complex in Paris, ON. Further schedule details will be released after the close of registration. Athletes will receive a two to three-hour window during the day to attend the tryout.

1Skate Ontario will also use this tryout to help determine the Skate Ontario Provincial Tier 1 Development Team and to help with the selection of nominations for the North American Cup tryout.

Application Process:

Athletes wishing to be considered for the team are required to complete an online application.

A one-time fee of $40.00 is payable with the online application form.

Application Deadline: 4:00 pm EST on May 3, 2019

The Team:

The selection panel for the Summer Competition Initiative will consist of Skate Ontario sport department staff. Team selections will be made at the discretion of the panel.

Team Details:

  • Athletes and coaches will travel as a team to the event
  • Athletes will share a room with another Ontario athlete
  • Athletes and coaches will be responsible for their own meals

Skate Ontario will be responsible for:

·        One (1) female and one (1) male team leader

Skate Ontario travel team members will be responsible for the following:

  • Competition registration fees
  • Signed agreement to Skate Ontario Team Travel Policies (athletes, parents and coaches)

Selection Process:

To be considered for the travel team, athletes must meet the following minimum requirements:

Pre-novice singles: Novice singles:
·        Double Axel in isolation ·        Double Axel in isolation
·        One (1) triple jump in isolation

Athletes will be asked to perform the following elements in isolation:

*Pre-novice and novice singles:
·        Double Axel
·        Any triple jumps
·        Spins from short program

Pair elements that should be attempted at the tryout:

*Pre-novice pairs: *Novice pairs:
·        Any throw double
·        Any side-by-side double jump
·        One (1) overhead lift
·        Any death spiral
·        Any throw double/triple
·        Any side-by-side double jump
·        Double twist
·        Backward inside death spiral

*All athletes will perform the elements in isolation. Following the elements, a selection of athletes will be asked to skate their short program for the panel.

Pre-novice dance: Novice dance:
·        Demonstrate the Paso Doble
·        Perform free dance with required elements
·        Demonstrate the Quickstep
·        Perform free dance with required elements

Athletes and coaches selected for the team will be notified by e-mail on June 1, 2019.
