CanPowerSkate Coach

Location: Thunder Bay and surrounding area

This position reports directly to the Pro-Liaison Chairperson and is responsible for providing group, instruction on the CanPowerSkate sessions, ensuring that each skater receives qualified instruction. The coach will focus their efforts to contribute to the delivery of a CanPowerSkate program which meets and surpasses the program delivery standards set by Skate Canada. Duties include, but are not limited to:

● Ensure program delivery meets and exceeds Skate Canada standards
● Ensure skater safety at all times (ice conditions, activities, etc.)
● Participate actively in all group lessons, leading when required, providing support through technique correction of skaters when not leading. Don’t stand back and watch the lesson, be part of it!
● Encourage skaters in participation and training in a positive way
● Help skaters remain focused on tasks through positive motivation
● Keep records of lessons delivered and attendance (skater & coach)
● Keep up to date and be aware of all Skate Canada technical communications
● Attend and participate in all coaching technique meetings
● Currently registered Skate Canada Professional Coach In Good Standing

An hourly wage based on experience and certification is paid for all on-ice program delivery hours. Currently our club operates from October to March delivering CanPowerskate programs at various arenas in Thunder Bay. For the 2018-19 season we are expecting to offer 2 hours of CanPowerSkate ice per week from October to March. We are planning an expansion of our operations to include 1-2 more communities to deliver CanPowerSkate programs and increasing our ice time to deliver full season CanPowerSkate programs.

Applicants for the position must have a minimum of the following qualifications:

● NCCP CanPowerSkate Certification
● Ability to work in a team coaching environment
● Up to date knowledge of Skate Canada program changes and pilot projects
● Skilled at using the Skate Canada website and tools
● Must be available Sunday afternoon and Monday evening

Coaches selected for an interview will be required to provide proof of the following:

● Registered: To be a Registered Skate Canada Professional Coach, full payment is required of all registration fees and insurance premiums as determined annually by Skate Canada.
● In Good Standing: To be a Registered Skate Canada Professional Coach in Good Standing, the following is required: ○ Must hold a valid first aid certificate ○ Screening must be done through the company approved by Skate Canada. Following review of the results of this screening, the status must show as “Clear” in the Skate Canada profile of the coach.
○ Must provide proof of Skate Canada CanPowerSkate Certified status OR NCCP CanPowerSkate In-Training status
○ NCCP certified coaches must maintain a renewed NCCP certification status as per the Coaching Association of Canada’s (CAC) Maintenance of Certification Policy
○ Have agreed to the Skate Canada Code of Ethics
○ Completed the Respect in Sport Activity Leader Training. A coach must be re-certified in this training every 3 years
